'Pool' and 'Poolside'

Pool

'Pool' and 'Poolside', September-October 2005

These two paintings are of the same swimming pool in Florida. Seen together, they are a good example of the variety resulting from my approach to painting.

'Pool' is a semi-abstract; a stylised image of the reflection on the water. In fact, the shapes involved are a fairly faithful reproduction of the reflection. It is only in the exaggeration of the colours and the fact that nothing but the reflection is shown, that the abstract quality lies.

'Poolside' is a more conventional painting, with the whole scene in the image and realistic colouring. Although reflection and shadows are a large part of the painting, none of the surface detail of 'Pool' is visible. Despite being a realistic depiction of the scene, the painting is still stylised. I worked from a computer-processed image (the image being blurred, among other things) which, to my eyes, produced a more pleasing image, and a more faithful representation of my memory of the scene.

These paintings can be found in the Water and Landscapes galleries.
